Fab Body Factory's Nails and Dumbbells Event

On Monday, June 11th, dozens of women in the DMV met at the Fab Body Factory in Upper Marlboro, MD for mixing, mingling, manicures, and massages! This was really a fun event! Gift bags were raffled off (I actually won one of these bags, complete with nail polish, workout gear, and lots of gift cards!) and one lucky lady won an amazing pair of Nike sneakers. These were dubbed the "Pink Friday" editions by Deborah's customers! They were in my gift bag and I can't wait to wear them.

 There was also a meditation session where everyone sat still for about 10 minutes and meditated on life and body image. It was extremely relaxing.

More lashes please!

Eyelashes have become the new must-have accessory... sort of like clip-in hair extensions. The longer, the better. Now women are going to great lengths to make their lashes more aesthetically pleasing. Falsies, prescription and over-the-counter medications, and even surgery are big business in the world of eyelashes.  

Falsies and surgery are pretty straight forward...

You can surgically get strands of lashes semi-permenantly sewn into your eyelid, which of course requires maintenance every so often. 

Or you can go to your neighborhood drugstore or the mall (Sephora, MAC, etc.) and glue 'em on for a night. 

But what about the pills and the magic potions that we rub onto our eyelashes to make them longer? Do these things work? And if so, how do they work? 

In a recent New York Times article, Kayleen Schaefer enlightens us. Products like Latisse contain a molecule that "prolongs the hair growth cycle so your lashes don't fall out as often." Therefore, overtime there are more lashes on your lids and they appear thicker and longer. 

This sounds great, right? And here's the big "BUT"... Most doctor's agree that once you stop taking these expensive pills and potions, your lashes will go right back to the way they were meaning you would have to keep buying them. 

My suggestion, forgo the medications and use good old-fashioned falsies and glue. If you don't trust yourself, go to the professionals and have them do it. There are lots of falsies that look very natural and don't cost hundreds and even thousands of dollars.

Beauty 360

Last night, I attended the Mocktinis and Lashes event at Beauty 360 (Connecticut Ave) hosted by Uptown Girl Entertainment. The set up was lovely and the staff extremely welcoming, but I have to begrudgingly admit, tickets should have cost more like $10-$20 instead of $35. There were tons of cupcakes and chocolates but no product samples. There were eyelash applications but no "expert" advice on makeup/skincare/etc., (even though my MUA, Shayla was very pleasant). I overheard one of the guests complaining about the lack of things to do at the event, asking the host, "Is this it?" I hung around for an hour, waiting for more people to show up, before deciding it was time to go.

On the bright side, the "mocktini" was delish, the store itself offered an array of top-of-the-line products (I will highlight one in an upcoming post), and ticket sales went to a great cause (GWFCC). I guess that makes the time and money spent worth it.

Guests were greeted with a table full of goodies. I had a pink cupcake. It was wonderful!

After walking around a little bit, Shayla, an esthetician and MUA offered to apply my first pair of fake lashes. I chose the ones on the right. To my surprise, they looked really natural! I'll definitely be wearing them over again, but only for a special occasion. I can't imagine wearing them all the time.

Before last night, I had never heard of this company. While browsing, I found this AMAZING liquid eyeshadow in hot pink. And when I tried it on all I could say was (in the words of Rachel Zoe), "I die." Not only was the color great but it has moisturizing properties so your eyelids aren't dried out by the end of the night.
